TIMOTHY MCGUIRE, PT - REHABILITATION SERVICE MANAGER
“Working and helping people is what lead me to choose the profession of physical therapy. I have the opportunity to meet and help people avoid or get over their injury and back to the activities they want to do. Whether it is an athlete returning to sport, a grandmother returning to her home, or a worker returning to work, I feel privileged to be able to assist in this rewarding process. I’m also privileged to manage the great therapy staff here at DCHS along with working closely with our referral sources. Being a local boy, I’m very proud of what we are able to offer in our community.”

"The miracle of the human body is evidence of a great Creator. It’s humbling and honorable to be able to work with people, helping them to see all they can do to help themselves regain a more excellent life and then empowering them with effective tools to achieve this more excellent life. Whether its pain limiting them for years, a post-surgical recovery, or a recent injury...there are universal principles true for all of us in restoring the normal, inherent balance and function to the body. Through appropriate interventions, exercises and education this is an achievable goal. Patients are more than diagnoses, or numbers. They are people…and people matter."

“I love working with my patients in Cardiac / Pulmonary Rehabilitation because I see their progression over months, and sometimes over years,” commented Shirley Dishaw-Beck, RN. “They become friends, and there is time to make a real connection with them. Inpatient nursing is very rewarding as well, but the nurse’s impact is over a much shorter period of time, and we do not necessarily see the long term effects of our care.”

“I work both in the acute setting as the Inpatient Rehab Coordinator and in the main outpatient clinic in Iron Mountain. My primary goal is best summed up in the American Physical Therapy Association’s new vision statement: "Transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience." I wake up each morning and am excited to able to evaluate each patient’s mobility restrictions and analyze what treatment techniques I can apply to meet their goals. In addition to therapist technique, I strongly emphasize home program and education to allow the patient to increase their locus of control over their dysfunction.”

"When the opportunity to work in Cardiac Rehabilitation presented itself to me in 1992, I was reluctant to say the least. After over 20 years working with heart patients I can now say it was the best career decision I ever made. Our patients generally spend several months with us and some continue to attend the program for many years. I enjoy helping patients learn how to live a healthy lifestyle. The most rewarding part of my job is when I see them years later in the community still exercising and looking great."

"I knew physical therapy would be an ideal career choice for me after I was injured playing college basketball and had to go through the rehab process on several different occasions. With that experience I saw the impact PT can have on a person, both physically and mentally. I’m fortunate to work in a field I am passionate about and I truly enjoy the interaction we have with each one of our patients. Every single person has a different life story, and it is our job to individualize each session to best meet our patient’s needs. I love being back in the UP and I am happy to be here helping serve our local community."

We become friends and partners in achieving their personal goals. I have as much excitement as my patients when they are able to return to the activities that they love to do. I continue to expand my knowledge in Aquatic Therapy to offer the best and most up-to-date treatments for all of my patients. I also have over 15 years of experience in outpatient care working with a full spectrum of orthopedic and neurological conditions. I enjoy using all of the skills I have learned to get my patients back to the activities they love to do."

"Physical therapy and cancer are words that people don’t associate with each other. It has been proven, however, that physical therapy can help patients maintain strength and range of motion to help increase function during and after cancer treatments. "

"Fifteen years of experience working as a physical therapist assistant mostly in inpatient acute care and home health settings, I’ve met many great people. The gratification I get from seeing a patient recover their independence after a surgery, serious fall or neurological condition ect.. can’t be seen on a paycheck. My philosophy is: “ put yourself in the place of the patient. How would I want to be treated?” Therefore my goal as a PTA is to design an individual plan that meets the patients needs and one they can live with. Going beyond physical therapy, I believe in advocating for my patients; calling doctors, social workers and outside agencies in order to provide patients with tools to get back their independence. From being homebound, to driving yourself to the grocery store……Priceless!"

"It is a joy to see people once again being able to do what they could not do when I met them. Treating people the way you would want to be treated; getting to know people and teaching them how to apply the tools that will improve their quality of life and bring a smile back to their face is a wonderful privilege."

“The gift of communication is one that most of us take for granted. It is vital for connecting us to what is most important, such as family and friends. I feel blessed to have chosen a career in which I am able to help individuals who have difficulty speaking or understanding oral and written language develop new skills or relearn old ones to help them communicate. I also enjoy the other aspects of speech pathology, like improving an individual’s ability to regain swallow function, such as after a debilitating stroke. I feel fortunate that I can work with people and be part of their rehabilitation journey toward greater speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing function. It is a joy to be able to work in a wonderful, supportive community hospital at DCHS.”

"Hand Therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb, including the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder girdle. It merges occupational and physical therapy theory and practice to treat individuals with injuries and / or post surgical procedures. The surgeries are often complicated and delicate. The technical complexity of these kinds of surgeries necessitates a high level of competence by the therapists with advanced skills in upper quarter rehabilitation and an understanding of the surgical procedure. The Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) must also remain current with changes in hand therapy practice."
